Abstract

Prisons and correctional facilities, particularlywithin Europe, have moved away from the traditionalrole of restrictive management and into one more akinto mentoring and re-education. This change ofdirection coupled with staffing shortages creates theneed for security systems capable of self-managementto relieve prison staff of the more fundamental tasks ofmanaging movement and interaction and allow them tofocus on the individual. This paper aims to provide apotential design roadmap to the tagging and trackingelement of an existing self-managing security systemfor use in prisons and correctional facilities. Logicalprocesses and autonomic computing elements havebeen suggested to support self-management whiletracking technology solutions are discussed that bestuphold optimum data security. The use of SVG isconsidered as an animation capable user interfacesolution.
