Abstract

Alcohol abuse and binge drinking are on the increase, with Ireland having the highest percentage change in per capita of alcohol consumption in Europe since 1989 and one of the worst underage drinking problems in Europe, with one in three 15 year olds binge drinking on a regular basis. As a result, alcohol abuse is having a significant impact on the health service and its associated costs of provision but also a negative impact on economic productivity. In order to prevent the debilitating effects of long-term alcohol abuse it is becoming increasingly important to train medical professionals and nurses in particular, as to how to recognize the signs of and subsequently treat those with alcohol abuse. This paper presents preliminary results of the development of an interactive multimedia training tool specifically designed to educate nursing students in the detection and treatment of alcohol abuse, utilizing best practice for Human Computer Interaction as well as instructional design, principles and techniques.
