As the needs and demands of the population constantly change there is now a growing amount of pressure to identify solutions which will provide a successful means of independent living. The deployment of technology within the home environment and its remote monitoring is one possible way in which this can be achieved. It has been the aim of this article to provide an initial insight into the different ways in which technology may be deployed to facilitate independent living. Along with the providing details of the potential opportunities in this area the paper touches upon some of the key challenges for future consideration.
