Abstract

This chapter in Machine for Experiential Urban Learning (MEUL), a book Golden also co-edited, presents architecture-led research about inter-disciplinary experiential approaches to urban design. MEUL argues for a shift from object- to process-led design priorities, based on testing of a proposed design framework in Belfast. The book is published by PLACE Ltd (Planning, Landscape, Architecture, Community, Environment), Northern Ireland’s Architecture and Built Environment Centre. It is distributed through an international network of architecture centres, universities, and professional and government bodies. The Foreword is by internationally award-winning architect Liza Fior, muf architecture/art.The joint research involved over 200 people (future professionals, existing practitioners, business and government representatives, and local people in Belfast). During a series of public workshops, multi-media installations, and exhibitions throughout 2011-2012, data was gathered. Documentation includes photography, video and drawings with feedback from interviews and anonymous surveys. Several co-authored peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations in the UK and Ireland support this output and contribute to MEUL’s co-authored Introduction and Conclusions. Golden examines the development and outcomes of a 2010 pilot in a sole-authored blind peer-reviewed international paper; presented in the US and published in 2012.Golden’s chapter addresses gaps in architects’ skills and knowledge. It proposes how architects’ tacit design knowledge can positively influence local regeneration initiatives. It claims that architecture and urban design - in dynamic, contested city contexts – should be more integrally linked to developing better professional skills. The research confirms that these skills often fall outside of traditional training, practice and practice-based research. In response, Golden draws lessons through critical reflection on project feedback, a systematic literature review and practice case studies, including visits and interviews with leading UK professionals. The chapter includes recommendations to improve the training of future professionals with more adaptable and collaborative design skills to improve architects urban-focused design practice.
