Abstract

This “Foreword” is one of two separate researched contributions to a forthcoming 2012 book on Healthcare architecture in Northern Ireland since 2000. The book is one of three edited volumes on architecture, which also includes education and housing design. The boxset is forthcoming for publication in late 2012, published jointly by PLACE (the Northern Ireland Centre for Architecture and the Built Environment), the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The National Lottery Fund. From a shortlist of architects with previous healthcare design experience and published research, the author was selected to contribute an initial article for the book on a single example of recent healthcare architecture in Northern Ireland. The article, “Grove Wellbeing Centre”, updates and expands a previous Case Study article “In Rude Health” commissioned from the author by Perspective Journal in 2009. This article presented the architecture as architectural and urban project impacting on the wider marginalised neighbourhood it was built in.As a result of a peer-review of the submitted articles in 2012, the author was again selected and commissioned by PLACE to write the Foreword as both an overview of presented projects and original commentary on the overall achievements for Northern Ireland’s UK-wide award-winning projects, and some challenges laid out to government in the context of ongoing cutbacks to funding since 2009. The author’s research is applied in the Foreword to critically appraises the state of healthcare in Northern Ireland. The author’s expertise is based on secondary and primary research, and the author’s previous direct experience as the project architect for innovative specialist healthcare facilities at Altnagelvin Hospital, and other primary care facilities in Northern Ireland; including working as a consultant through the University of Ulster to on going hospital design in Belfast.
