Abstract
This article examines the poetry attributed to Gearóid Iarla (1338-98), Third Earl of Desmond, in the fifteenth century Book of Fermoy. In addition to discussing the possibility that the poems may be forgeries or so-called 'courteous' ascriptions, the work also treats of their content and style and seeks to place them in their appropriate literary, cultural, and political contexts.
