Abstract
The chapter deals with the side-lining of the Chilver Report and the work of the Steering Group under the Chairmanship of Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer; the formation of a Proto-University in tandem with the existing institutions; and the successful formation of the new entity. The post-merger years from 1984-1991 are described in terms of cross-campus developments, both curricular and research-oriented.
