Abstract
THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN NORTHERN IRELAND HAS TAKEN ON A DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER DUE TO ITS GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION, THE SURVIVAL OF THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL SYSTEM AND THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE IRISH LANGUAGE (TO CERTAIN SECTIONS OF THE COMMUNITY). THIS CHAPTER DISCUSSES THE SOCIO-POLITICAL SCENARIO AGAINST WHICH SUBSEQUENT PAPERS IN THE BOOK ARE FOREGROUNDED, AND ALSO HIGHLIGHTS THE CAUSES OF CERTAIN MOTIVATIONAL DIFFICULTIES THAT BEDEVIL THE WORK OF LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN NORTHERN IRELAND (AND ELSEWHERE).
