Abstract
This article analyses the experience of women in prison in Northern Ireland, within the context of a society emerging from violent conflict. It documents how women's imprisonment has been affected by the long term impact of the Conflict on the penal system in Northern Ireland and concludes that transformative change is necessary to ensure better compliance with human rights standards.
