Magee, Justin, McGilloway, Stephen and Grant , Jane (2011) CCEA, NPD Vodcasts for HugX product. [Digital or visual media]
This is the latest version of this item.
This flagship educational documentary, featuring the international award winning HugX product, was commissioned by the Council for Curriculum Examination and Assessment (CCEA). This six-series published programme totals almost 40 minutes of design education for new product development (NPD). To date (March 2012) the impact reaches 195 education centres educating 4,259 students. Following a series of curriculum advisory sessions revising the A level syllabus in Technology and Design by education and industry representatives, it was discovered that hitherto case studies within the Technology and Design national curriculum were inappropriate and unrepresentative of the design research and development process. This case study is the first commissioned by CCEA as formal curriculum support, radically changing the way in which teachers engage with the design process. This research makes specific references to the various methodologies and stages of the design process integrating innovation and creativity into their Technology and Design curriculum for the first time. It encompasses ideas generation, development, prototyping, testing and production and cyclic evaluation. The programme identifies the areas of ‘trial and error innovation’, ‘emotive design’ (relationships between pet and product, owner and pet and pet and owner and product) and ‘interaction design’ (usability engineering). The original designed artefact (2004-2006), by commercial commission, was submitted for the RAE 2008. Since then, it has received 1st place for the ‘Lifestyle Innovation Award’ at the International Pet Fashion Week New York (2008), from 35 entries worldwide, including Italian Design company Alessi. It featured in a special edition of common publication Tomorrows Technology Today (Best Gadgets of 2008). The product range was expanded (2008/09) using entirely polymer structures, including a minimal footprint, targeted at the Japanese market (funded by Invest NI Innovation vouchers and City Council Innovators Promoters Programme awards totalling £10K).
