Abstract
This essay argues that the apparent shift in William Forsythe's work as exemplified in the closing of the Ballett Frankfurt in 2004 and the creation of The Forsythe Company belies a fundamental set of concerns that he has been working on his entire career. The essay introduces the book, which is the first English-language book on Forsythe, the most important choreographer of his age.
