Abstract

Although recent advances in developingdrug carriers and targeting systems to facilitate sitedirected,cancer chemotherapy-based treatment modalitiesfor solid tumours in general have indicated verysignificant patient benefit, tumours occurring in thebrain have presented significant challenges. The purposeof this chapter will be to review existing therapeuticapplications of transcranial ultrasound and toexamine current experimental approaches based on theuse of ultrasound to non-invasively enhance the actionof cancer chemotherapeutics in a site-specific manner.Benefits afforded by such therapeutic strategies in thetreatment of localised intracranial solid tumours willbe highlighted.
