Abstract

The "Joyce in Art" exhibition at the Rem Koolhaas-designed Museum of Art, Seoul National University, arose from the first exhibition project with this title, held as visual centre piece of the Bloomsday Centenary Festival, RHA, Dublin 2004. It was researched with an IRCHSS Post-doctoral Fellowship and led to a network of artists who are particularly interested in Joyce. They (and private collectors) made work available for this exhibition. Culture Ireland funded it. There was vivid interest in Joyce in South Korea, where learning and (English-speaking) culture are earnestly pursued - and where there are new initiatives for socially engaged art practice emerging.Balka's projection of Tanz, showing a moth. The exhibition was reviewed in The Korean Times and in The Seoul Times. I gave a lecture to an audience of invited guests from culture and business at the Residence of the Irish Ambassador to Korea. The university setting (SNU is the top university in South Korea) made this project an interesting opportunity to link with scholars from many disciplines and to open it up as a teaching tool. I trained guides and my book was well used as a resource.
