Abstract
The "masculine" gods of the "Old Man" river, Mississippi, enable male protagonists of river novels to reaffirm and empower their masculinity in a manner which is denied their female counterparts. Essay involves analysis of Twain's "Huckleberry Finn", Faulkner's "The Wild Palms" and Ford's "A Piece of My Heart", with reference to gender theories of Judith Butler.
