Abstract
This chapter in the Oxford History of the Irish Book examines the under-researched area of loyalist and counter-revolutionary publishing in the era of the French Revolution. It argues that texts such as Francis Kirkpatrick's Loyalty and the Times (1804) reflect a tension between 'respectable' authorship and plebeian readership which had implications for content and meaning.
