Abstract
A flagship educational documentary was commissioned by the Council for Curriculum Examination and Assessment (CCEA), following a series of curriculum advisory sessions for the revised GSE 'AS' and 'A2' level syllabus in Technology and Design. It was discovered that hitherto case studies within the Technology and Design national curriculum, for product design, were inappropriate and unrepresentative of design industry reality. This case study is the first commissioned and by CCEA as formal curriculum support and will radically change the way in which teachers engage with the design process, starting in September 2011. In this case study, specific references have been made to the various stages of the design process and methodologies used. The entire design process is covered from ideas generation, through prototype, testing and production and including evaluative dialogue. The programme identifies the importance of trial and error innovation, emotive design (relationships between pet and product, owner and pet and pet and owner and product) and interaction design (usability engineering). There are 6 programmes published in the case study totalling almost 40 minutes of design education for new product development (NPD).
