This chapter compares and contrasts the Reverend William Richardson, co-founder of the Irish Yeomanry and the United Irishman, William Tennent. It argues that, despite their political differences, they shared intellectual interests. Irish intellectual history has been neglected in favour of political history; yet, as this example shows, it offers an alternative paradigm to interpret the past.
