Abstract: This paper explores the main contributions of the fi gurational sociologicaltradition to the sociology of sport. It also charts the development of this work sincethe pioneering text, Quest for Excitement, by Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning, as wellas offering a brief overview of some of the debates and disagreements that have arisenwithin the area.
