Abstract

4 min animation. Commissioned by Belfast Exposed for a premier in Secret Satellites, an exhibition curated by K. Downey. This is part of a body of work (Quantum Questions for Dummies) being made in consultation with astronomers from Armagh Observatory. I have developed a ‘show and ask’ methodology when working with astronomers. This entails me showing images that I have made in my attempt to understand the dynamics of particular structures that I am aware of in the universe. However I discovered that my images triggered astronomers to talk about other structures of which I was previously ignorant. Professor Mark Bailey likened my attempt to the earth’s magnetic field to the Oort Cloud, a ‘halo’ of shards of rock and debris, which potentially delineates the boundary of our solar system, at the very farthest gravitational reach of our sun. Many of the images in this animation arose from such conversations. The animation presents a variety of structures across the universe with similar forms whilst possibly separated by light years or hugely differing scales. Some of the structures are observed whilst others are as yet theoretical but none of them can be observed directly with the naked eye. This animation ‘morphs’ variety of structures across the universe, which share similar forms but may be separated by light years or hugely differing scales. Some of the structures are observed whilst others are as yet theoretical but none of them can be observed directly with the naked eye.The work was made for an invited commissions by BX and shown alongside works by Trevor Paglen, Simon Faithful and Joanna GriffinIt has subsequently been shown in Hybrid RedLine, Boulder, Colorado, USA, Curated by R. Kerrane and in Tulca What Became of the People we Used to Be curated by Greg McCarthy
