Abstract

The “Dublin Parlour Civic Square” has been selected by a specialist/esteemed jury as the winning proposal for an international competition for a new public square for the dockland area of Dublin. This project, with €2.5 M Budget, has involved the research and design of a civic event space to host a programme of arts, culture and leisure events accessible to diverse communities. In this research both landscape strategies and temporal strategies have been investigated and implemented as a design methodology. The use of temporal strategies in urban design and architecture is an emerging field in architectural discourse and this project will be one of the first implemented through the conventional mechanisms of architectural practice. The project has been informed by my previous research utilizing critical theory to interpret the appropriation of urban space with particular case studies focusing on the contexts of Berlin. Due to the experimental nature of the project and the high profile nature of the competition the project has been very widely decimated within the architectural media.
