Abstract
A practical workshop applying clown techniques to Clov's role at the beginning of Endgame, to explore the limits of embodying optimism, constant failure, and physical maladroitness in Beckett's text, working with a professional actor who had recently played the role at Bristol Old Vic, without recourse to clown techniques. A prime consideration was the effect on the actor's capacity to physically and mentally sustain the performance using contrasting strategies.
