Abstract

The Museum PAN in Naples, Italy commissioned me for the exhibition ‘The Enterprise of Art’ with a participatory public art piece and a museum Installation. Among the artists in the exhibition were: Guy Ben-Ner, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Christian Jankowski, Sarah Morris, Danica Phelps, Santiago Sierra. To what extent can art be considered as “capital”, becoming a mirror of the general economic situation, and a thermometer of current trends? The Museum director stated: “We are in the city where Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, two key protagonists of twentieth-century art, met 28 years ago. In their own manner, these artists caused a radical change in the relationship between the production of artworks and the economy…” The museum director invited me to make a site-specific museum installation about the ‘Left over Penny Campaign 1998-2002’ and commissioned her to develop a participatory concept for the public space in Naples. In conversation and dialogue with the director and museum staff we develop a participatory piece, located in proximity to the building: Iniziativa Centesimo Avanzato. We installed an open tray in front of the museum collecting one Euro cent pieces, asking the population of Naples what they wish for their own city, for the common good? (methods: postcards, media, blog, oral propaganda, museum educationists). The museum staff took care of the work over the period of 4 months. Through the conflicted history of the city, the population is extremely withdrawn and sceptical about any kind of participatory citizenship and activity. The project successfully collected 474 wishes and 259 730 cents. A committee consisting of museum staff, members of the Goethe Institute and Naples based artists decided in November 2008 for one wish to be realized.Review: An exhibition catalogue was published (p.30-35), numerous media coverages.
