Abstract
Protecting the environment means engaging in activities that have specific consequences for the environment. Understanding how to protect the environment means understanding how to ensure that these specific activities occur. Behaviour analysis can play a pivotal role in protecting the environment because it has amassed a wealth of facts about how circumstances affect the ways in which we are likely to behave. If we can increase our awareness of how to manage behaviour, we can increase our chances of protecting the environment. This paper discusses steps already taken in this direction by behaviour analysts interested in decreasing the problems associated with littering.
