Abstract

This body of research is concerned with the role of drawing as a means of conveying a sense of memory and place. A phenomenological approach has been used as a research method. The research outcomes (exhibition of artefacts) have been supported by LAND2, an interdisciplinary research groups concerned with the aesthetics of landscape, locality and environment Feathered Hills and Devolve are two mixed media drawings with assemblage investigating landscape, sense of place and the role of memory. The research was included in All Over the Place: Drawing Place, Drawing Space, a touring exhibition with venues at University of West of England Bristol (2008) and the Stanley and Burton Gallery University of Leeds (2010), published in the exhibition catalogue All Over the Place: Drawing Place, Drawing Space, Caseroom Press Lincoln 2009. During the Leeds exhibition a chaired roundtable discussion disseminated exchange between the group members (David Hill/ Leeds 2010).Peer review: independent curation and selection in relation to objectives of inter-disciplinary academic research group Land2 (research objectives http://www.land2.uwe.ac.uk). Further research has been developed in drawing and intaglio printmaking (see exhibit 'Evolve' (F.E. McWilliam Gallery, in conjunction with Seacourt Printworkshop 2011)A sketchbook research study into weather patterns and sky formation has subsequently become translated into a series of exhibition drawings and intaglio prints. The whole body of work has been exhibited in a two-person show at Graffan Gallery, Castle Espie, Wild Wetlife Centre, Comber (June 2011), shared with printmaker Bridget Farmer.
