This is a reprint of a short article that first appeared on 'Fortnight' magazine in October, 1993. The article looked at the Northern Ireland office ads for the confidential telephone which appeared on television during the summer of 1993. There were some interesting changes in the way in which these ads represented the 'terrorists' and the article concludes by speculating that these were part of a strategy that were designed to prepare people for the talks that would include paramilitaries.
