Abstract
This chapter examines the response of PGCE Initial teacher education students to a programme designed to engage them in the discussion of controversial political and cultural issues iin the divided society of Northern Ireland . It investigates the impact a culture of avoidance can have on students' reactions and, particularly, the problematic nature of working with Initial Teacher Education students in the field of Values Education, especially when the work impinges on individuals’ cultural and political identity.
