Abstract

Sculpture commissioned by Microsoft Ireland.In this sculpture five figurative ‘life-casts’ relate to and support a ‘Fiber-optic’ ring encircling a tree. The ring, which is illuminated at night, changes colour and illuminates the figures and the tree.Each figure represents one of the five senses and they each endeavor to relate to the plastic ring, or the location through a specific sense: touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. My intention was to represent the human search for knowledge and how we experience the world and begin to understand reality. The ring is a representation of information flow or technological systems with which we engage in this contemporary search.The artwork was commissioned by Microsoft Ireland through a limited competition, (i.e. only certain artists were invited by Microsoft to make proposals.)The work was funded by Microsoft Ireland and the competition was run through the Sculptors Society of Ireland.
