Advances in nano technology and manufacturing processes are being harnessed to produce devices that can provide immediate, quantitative diagnostic information that relates to, and can positively impact upon, physiological wellbeing. New techniques to produce disposable sensing devices that can facilitate the decentralised high throughput screening of clinical biomarkers are being developed for applications that extend from the laboratory to the treatment ward, paramedic and, ultimately, will reach into the home. Key advantages proffered by such technology include the prospect of rapid predictive-preventative screening for the early onset of various diseases and complications or assessing day to day factors responsible for maintaining health.
