Abstract
These photographs make reference to the work of the French 19th century Landscape painter, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. In particular these works depict a subject often repeated in Corot’s work, the bent tree, a motif which dominated his painting in the 1860s. During this period Corot became increasingly aware in the work of the early photographers, and his interest led him to use a more suppressed palette influenced by the monochromatic tones of early photography. The photographs in this series not only make direct reference to the composition, but also the subdued colour of Corot’s painting of this period. Details: Series of two works, entitled, ‘Flooded Tree (after Jean Baptiste Camille Corot)’ (2006) colour lightjet photographic print mounted on dibond 48.5cm x 55.5cm, ‘Broken Tree (after Jean Baptiste Camille Corot)’ (2003) colour c.type photographic print mounted on dibond 48.5 cm x 55.5 cm.
