Abstract
This body of work draws on notions of the sublime. These works fix the most ephemeral conditions of the landscape, the ‘elements’ themselves, in representation. By photographing in very specific weathers, particularly mist and fog, I have been producing documents of that which is intangible; in these images, each location, the supposed ‘site’ of the work, is rendered unknowable. In its most literal appearance, the work investigates the ‘weakest’ sense of the sublime as explored by Burke (one sees a picture of a phenomenon inspiring awe, yet one’s detachment from the scene reinforces one’s sense of safety and thus one’s pleasure). However, the erasure of the subject, or the isolation of elements within it by wreaths of fog, produces a more generalised ‘dread and melancholy’ (Kant). Details:Series of two works, entitled, 'The Dream I & II', colour lightjet photographic prints, both measuring 122 cm x 152 cm. Edition of three.
