Abstract

The establishment of the fire resistance of concrete structures reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymer ( FRP) bars is a prerequisite to the widespread applications of fibrous rods in buildings. This paper presents the results of an experimental study, which was conducted to investigate fire performance of the concrete beams reinforced with carbon FRP (CFRP) bars. The beams were designed over- reinforced and were subjected to standard heating curve in a floor furnace. Full service load was applied half an hour before the start of the heating test and was kept constant for the duration of the test. A non-uniform temperature distribution was found across the height of the cross-section. The CFRP reinforced beams were stiffer than similar steel-reinforced beams and failed by the crushing of concrete in compression.
