Abstract

The Web is evolving from a global information spaceto a collaborative problem solving environment in which services(resources) are dynamically discovered and composed intoworkflows for problem solving, and later disbanded. This givesrise to an increasing demand for provenance, which enables usersto trace how a particular result has been arrived at by identifyingthe resources, configurations and execution settings. In this paperwe analyse the nature of service-oriented computing and define anew conception called augmented provenance. Augmentedprovenance enhances conventional provenance data withextensive metadata and semantics, thus enabling large scaleresource sharing and deep reuse. A Semantic Web Service (SWS)based, hybrid approach is proposed for the creation andmanagement of augmented provenance in which semanticannotation is used to generate semantic provenance data and thedatabase management system is used for execution datamanagement. We present a general architecture for the approachand discuss mechanisms for modeling, capturing, recording andquerying augmented provenance data. The approach has beenapplied to a real world application in which tools and GUIs aredeveloped to facilitate provenance management and exploitation
